The Mechanics of the Freeze

"Iced out" stopped being slang in 2003 and became a manufacturing spec. The phrase means continuous stone-setting from end to end — no bare metal showing on the front face — using either real diamonds, lab-grown stones, or graded cubic zirconia. The flash is the point; the price separates the tiers.

CZ vs lab diamond vs real diamond. Cubic zirconia gives the same light return as a D-flawless diamond to the naked eye at conversation distance. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to mined diamonds — same hardness, same fire — at 60-80% lower cost. Real mined diamonds cost 3-10× lab-grown and the visual difference is invisible without a loupe. Setting types matter more than stone size. Micro-pavé (small stones in dense beads) flashes harder than prong-set larger stones for the same weight. Channel settings (stones held between two metal walls) survive daily wear better than prong settings. Baguette cuts (rectangular stones) read more modern; round brilliants read classic.
